Do you feel like you’re in your caterpillar, bug soup, or butterfly era?
No matter your point of metamorphosis, welcome.
Welcome to a space where the workplace can be a space for growth, creativity, and genuine connection.
I’m Hanan. It’s pronounced Huh-nann (rhymes with Anne).
Nice to meet ya! Or, if we already know each other—hey again, bestie.
Who am I? Funny you should ask. I’m a mom, friend, partner, corporate girlie, and author. For more than 20 years, I’ve been exploring the sweet spot where writing, marketing, and learning & development meet, discovering what makes teams not just function, but truly flourish. I’ve rolled out training programs, improved both internal and external communications, and built marketing strategies for companies worldwide.
Now, I’m excited to kick off the Everybody, Be Cool! Substack—a space where I share practical, inclusive tips to help every employee connect, collaborate, and grow.
Why is personal development so important in the workplace? Well, each employee's journey of self-improvement creates a ripple effect that elevates our collective work environment.
We. Are. All. Connected!
Navigating a Moving (and Confusing) Target
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by office politics or exhausted by the unspoken rules of the workplace, you’re not alone.
There’s the chaos of emotional mosh pits in meetings, the silent battles over who gets heard, and the struggle to remain authentic in a system that often rewards playing by someone else’s rules.
And the rules are always changing.
Depending on the trends.
The context.
So many unknown unknowns.
I wrote ‘Everybody, Be Cool!’ to explore these challenges and share the insights that have helped me—and countless others—transform everyday interactions into moments of genuine connection.
Inspired by communication and conflict resolution training, leadership development programs, and the spectrum of workplace dynamics—from shows like Succession, The Sopranos, 9 to 5, and Office Space—I’ve gathered ideas, personal stories, and expert insights that may help you at work (and life).
But why should personal and professional growth be exclusive to a select few?!
Every single person deserves the tools to unlock their full potential.
That means YOU reading this. YOU deserve it and more.
The Imaginal Cells Theory: Or, Why You’re a Caterpillar Having an Existential Crisis
You know The Very Hungry Caterpillar? Yup—the classic kids’ book where the little guy eats his way through various foods before wrapping himself in a cocoon and coming out as a stunning butterfly?
Here’s the part the book doesn’t tell you: inside the cocoon, the caterpillar dissolves into goo.
Like, full-on liquefies. Turns into bug soup. It has no idea what’s happening. It’s just vibes and chaos.
And then? Tiny little things called imaginal cells start activating. These cells contain the blueprint for its transformation. They guide it from “sentient noodle” to “magnificent winged being.”
And those imaginal cells allow the butterfly to remember its caterpillar life.
And if that isn’t the most poetic metaphor for career growth, I don’t know what is.
Right now, you might be feeling stuck. Maybe you’re navigating a toxic workplace. Maybe you’re dealing with a boss who makes Succession’s Logan Roy look like a model of emotional intelligence. Maybe you’re just tired of feeling like a cog in a very boring, very inefficient machine.
That’s where the magic of awareness kicks in. The moment you start recognizing patterns—your own, your workplace’s, society’s—is the moment you activate your imaginal cells.
You start realizing:
✅ You can learn how to advocate for yourself without feeling like you need a law degree.
✅ You can develop power skills (aka "soft skills" rebranded because they are, in fact, the hardest skills to master).
And just like that, you start transitioning from “confused office caterpillar” to “strategic, self-aware butterfly.” 🦋
Capture the Chaos and Create Your Cocoon
🔥✍🏼HOT TIP ✍🏼🔥 Here's a way to start transforming your work life: try journaling.
When you take a few minutes to write down your goals and thoughts, you’re not just venting your frustrations—you’re creating a roadmap for success.
In fact, the Harvard Business Review found that professionals who set clear, specific goals are up to 10 times more successful than those who don’t.
Journaling isn’t just about venting your frustrations (though, trust me, it helps); it’s about capturing those small insights and “aha” moments that signal your transformation.
Whether you’re jotting down a sudden burst of clarity during a stressful meeting or tracking your journey from caterpillar to butterfly, putting pen to paper can help you see the patterns and progress in your own life.
It’s like creating a personal map of your metamorphosis—one that reminds you that even in the midst of chaos, there’s a blueprint for greatness brewing inside you.
So grab a notebook, write down what you want (as clearly and specifically as possible), and watch how clarity sparks transformation in your career.
